Organization's Mission
Our nursery grows and propagates native plants in the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve (Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico), which is the northernmost tropical forest in the Hemisphere. After almost twenty years, we have created nine arboretums and reforested 230 areas around springs in five communities. Since the main drive for deforestation in the area was the introduction of cattle for several decades, our work involves the active participation of peasants (owners of ejido lands) who are interested in developing “productive restoration” of their land, starting with water springs which are particularly abundant in the area. In each spring a variety of species is selected so that biodiversity is recovered.
Apart from continuing our work in more than 40 springs, we are planting native riparian species in some of the streams that flow into the Catemaco Lake.
